Persian Fever in Yerevan: Language Schools Double as Pro-Iran Sentiment Hits All-Time High in Armenia

Iran's cultural attaché in Armenia has announced a significant expansion of academic cooperation and an increase in Persian language centers to 22 schools across the country, amid a surge in pro-Iran sentiment.

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking at the third session of the scientific conference series "The Intellectual Encounter of the Islamic World with the Ramadan War," organized by the international department of Baqir al-Olum University and the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, Mohammad Asadi Movahed, Iran's cultural attaché in Yerevan, detailed the reflection of regional developments in Armenian society and reported a dramatic rise in public and elite support for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He described the expansion of scientific and cultural engagement as one of the key outcomes of these developments, noting that Armenia, as the world's first Christian nation, holds a distinct religious identity within its social and political structure on the international stage.

Asadi Movahed examined three major events of the past year—the 12-day war, the January unrest, and the Ramadan War—stating that each had a different reflection across elite circles and public opinion in Armenia regarding Iran.

From 80% Support to a Record 90%

The cultural attaché pointed to the 12-day war, during which broad support for Iran reached 80 percent among Armenian elites and society at large. He identified the deep dissatisfaction within Armenian society over the Zionist regime's political and military support for the Republic of Azerbaijan during the Karabakh war as a key factor in strengthening positive sentiment toward Iran.

Regarding the period of January unrest, Asadi Movahed noted that while a portion of the supportive atmosphere was eroded under the influence of Western media, informed elites aware of Iran's realities maintained their pro-Iran stance. With the outbreak of the Ramadan War as the third major event, the equation shifted once again in Iran's favor. The Islamic Republic's steadfastness and crisis management capabilities in the face of the United States and the Zionist regime drew widespread public admiration, pushing popular support to an unprecedented 90 percent.

Government Caution Amid Public Outpouring

Asadi Movahed explained that, unlike the alignment of public opinion, the Armenian government acted with greater caution due to America's more direct role in the Ramadan War, refraining from adopting explicit positions to shield itself from Western political pressure. He also pointed to the Armenian Church's approach, citing the country's broader political pivot toward the West and its distancing from Russia as the primary reason for the caution exercised by Armenian religious and political institutions regarding recent developments.

A Leap in Scientific and Educational Diplomacy

The cultural diplomat identified the opening of Armenian universities to Iranian diplomacy as one of the most significant recent achievements. "During the Ramadan War, we were able to hold at least five scientific conferences at Armenian academic centers—an opportunity that was not easily accessible before," he said.

He further reported an unprecedented boom in Persian language learning, noting that the number of Persian language education centers has risen from 12 to 22 schools, with the number of learners increasing from 180 to 400. Asadi Movahed also highlighted the formation of grassroots campaigns in support of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, a rise in Muslim attendance at Friday prayers, and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony held in memory of the Minab martyrs in the courtyard of Yerevan's Blue Mosque.
